Professional Experience
Dr. Zhiruo Zhang, Research Professor and Director of the Department of Community Health & Behavioral Medicine, SJTU School of Public Health, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Dr. Zhang serves as the Distinguished Professor of China Medical Association, Deputy Chair of Internet Medicine Committee of Shanghai Medical Association (Science Popularization Sector), Director of the Joint Center of Smart Health of Shanghai CDC and School of Public Health of SJTU, and Consultant of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission (Science Popularization Sector). Dr. Zhang also serves as the associate editor and reviewer for Chinese Journal of Hospital Administration and many other academic periodicals.
Dr. Zhang served as the Assistant Director of the Health Department of Gansu Province, Vice President of the China Hospital Development Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Vice President of the School of Public Health, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Research interests
Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on smart health, community health behaviors, medical insurance policies for major diseases, and doctor-patient relationship. He has published over thirty papers in SCI peer-reviewed journals with cumulative impact factor over 100, over twenty papers in Chinese core periodicals, and one book in the above research areas. As the principal investigator, Dr. Zhang led the research project of Benefiting Chinese Patients with DRGs and Clinical pathways in 2009, which was one of the first several empirical research on DRGs. This research laid the foundation of the broad trial operations of DRGs in Chinese medical insurance system. He conducted health economic evaluation on the five childhood major diseases (e.g., leukemia and malignant tumor) and suggested no coverage risk in the Chinese new rural cooperative medical system (NCMS), which led to the ice-breaking movement of the major disease insurance scheme for NCMS. As the principal investigator, Dr. Zhang led the field study on the operation of universal healthcare for rural residents in Shenmu, Shaanxi Province, in 2009. Based on the healthcare behavior differences between rural and urban residents under the concern of deductible requirements, Dr. Zhang proposed that an average governmental subsidy of 300RMB per person might cover the basic medical insurance for Chinese rural residents. Findings in this investigation largely promoted the NCMS financing movements and were transformed in multiple policies of the National Health Commission.
