On the morning of April 4, a delegation led by ProfessorJoseph Sung, Senior Vice President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Professor Fan Xianqun, Vice President of SJTU, Chancellor of School of Medicine, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, met with the guests at Xuhui Campus. Representatives from the SJTU Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Puyuan Global Institute of Future Technology, the School of Medicine's Office of International Affairs, and Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to SJTUSM attended the meeting.
Professor Joseph Sung provided an overview of NTU’s disciplinary development in medicine, artificial intelligence, and biomedical engineering. He expressed hopes to build on the existing foundation of collaboration between the two universities to further promote close cooperation among the universities, medical schools, and affiliated hospitals. He emphasized the importance of leveraging complementary strengths, expanding the scope of collaboration, and deepening cooperative ties. In particular, he looked forward to exploring in-depth cooperation in areas such as home-based healthcare and smart hospitals, and to advancing comprehensive clinical research collaboration. He also proposed establishing joint platforms such as a Biomedical Engineering Joint School and a Research Institute for Medical Artificial Intelligence to accelerate the application of AI in medicine through the integration of resources from both institutions.
Chancellor Fan remarked that NTU is one of Asia’s top research universities and that medical AI represents a critical direction for future development. He noted that the two medical schools already share a solid foundation for collaboration and stressed the need to further integrate their strengths to promote the deep integration of AI and medical research, thereby transforming clinical diagnosis and treatment models. He shared that SJTUSM is actively exploring smart healthcare initiatives and has made initial progress in areas such as chronic disease management, remote monitoring, and intelligent diagnosis and treatment systems. He looked forward to deepening practical cooperation with NTU in these fields, co-developing high-level joint research platforms and talent training mechanisms, and contributing more “smart solutions” to global health and the digital transformation of regional healthcare systems.
The meeting was chaired by Professor Ni Jun, Dean of SJTU Global Institute of Future Technology. Professor Miao Chunyan, Associate Vice President of NTU, introduced the university’s strengths in medical AI. Dr. Fan Xiuyi, Assistant Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, presented the work of NTU’s Centre for AI in Medicine (C-AIM), which focuses on four key areas: mental health, frailty in the elderly, medical imaging, and cancer screening. Xu Lin, Director of SJTUSM’s Office of International Affairs, and Xia Weiliang, Associate Dean of Global Institute of Future Technology, respectively shared updates on the development of their institutes. Both sides also explored undergraduate and graduate student exchange programs, future models for talent cultivation, interdisciplinary medical-engineering collaboration, and joint scientific research initiatives.
