Dr. Zhang is committed to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with a particular focus on the design of biomaterials and vascularized bone regeneration, and has made several remarkable achievements: (1) cells, materials and cytokines screening in promoting rapid maxillofacial bone regeneration and early osseointegration of dental implants; (2) rapid vascularization inducing of bulk scaffold materials; originality of using hollow canal structure and bioactive ionic components to accelerate vascularized bone regeneration; (3) introduction of biomimetic design to construct microenvironment for vascularized bone regeneration, using magnesium-containing microenvironment to incubate stem cells to simulate the developmental condition, and designing magnetically controlled growth-factor-immobilized cell sheets to mimic the native tissue.
Since 2009, Dr. Zhang has published about 40 SCI papers as first/corresponding author, including Advanced Materials, Advanced Science (cover story), Journal of Dental Research (cover story), and Biomaterials (best image of the year), etc. Meanwhile, he has applied for over 20 patents for oral and maxillofacial vascularized bone regeneration and functional restoration of dental implants.
