Biography
Professor Yong-Bing Xiang graduated from the Anhui Medical University and Shanghai Medical University, with his bachelor's degree in medicine in 1986 and a master of science (medicine) in 1989, respectively. Since 2000, he has been a professor in epidemiology at the Shanghai Cancer Institute (affiliated with the Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine since 2010). His major research interests are the studies of cancer patterns and trends, cancer survival analysis, designs in case-control and cohort studies, application of statistical models, systematic review and meta-analysis in cancer epidemiology, as well as etiological studies for some common cancers. During the past 15 years, he was involved in several projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, for example, the State Key Project Specialized for Infectious Diseases of China (2008ZX10002-015; 2012ZX10002008-002), National Key Basic Research Program "973 project" (2015CB554000), National Key Project of Research and Development Program of China (2016YFC1302503; 2021YFC2500404).
In detail, he has over 33 years of experience with the following research topics/fields, such as analysis of cancer statistics/cancer registration data, estimation, and evaluation of population-based survival rates or relative survival rates of common cancers, investigation of risk or protective factors for some common cancers, systematic review and meta-analysis of cancer risk factors and cancer survival, as well as cancer control activities in Shanghai. Since the early 1990s, he has been involved in many population-based case-control and cohort studies for common cancers (e.g. cancers of the lung, liver, bladder, endometrium, colon/rectum, stomach, and breast). Regarding the case-control and cohort studies in cancer epidemiology in Shanghai, he has devoted long-term great efforts to study design and conduct, such as the development of questionnaires, sampling, implementation, coordination, quality control, collection of the biological sample, data management, active and passive follow-up, and statistical analysis of the large-scale database, and so on. He was also responsible for the validation studies of the food frequency questionnaire and the physical activity questionnaire in prospective, population-based cohort studies in Shanghai. Regarding the training of young fellows and education of students, he has guided more than 40 students (including master's and Ph.D. programs) since 2000, through connections with the School of Public Health, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. In 2007-2008 and 2010-2014, two young fellows from Indonesia, one master student from France, and two MD/Ph.D. candidate students from the USA finished their training projects under his supervision and mentoring at the Shanghai Cancer Institute. I have authored or co-authored approximately 200 publications in peer-reviewed Chinese journals and 400 publications in peer-reviewed English journals on cancer and chronic diseases.
