Joint Ph.D. Degree Program between
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTU-SM) and Hebrew University of Jerusalem Faculty of Medicine (HUJI-MED)
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) enjoys a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China. The School of Medicine (SJTU-SM) is one of the best medical institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipal Government, recognized for its great achievement in scientific research and medical education.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI) is Israel’s premier university as well as its leading research institution. The Hebrew University is ranked internationally among the 100 leading universities in the world. The Faculty of Medicine (HUJI-MED) is a major international clinical and research medical center.
The Joint Ph.D. Degree (JPD) Program aims to promote synergistic collaborations between SJTU-SM and HUJI-MED through the combined supervision of joint students for a dual Ph.D degree. The scientific proficiency of the participating faculties covers a large spectrum of modern life sciences, which are clustered into 4 blocks: Immune regulation, Cancer, Infection Immunity and Metabolic disorders. These blocks support a broad range of synergistic research activities based on complementary scientific approaches, unique technologies, and advanced infrastructure of the Program’s faculty and partner institutions.
1 Qualification of Applicants
Applicants for the JPD Program will:
a. Have a Master’s degree with a thesis
- The graduation certificate and degree diploma shall be recognized by the Ministry of Education and verified by the Chinese overseas representative office and the JPD Program office;
b. Be under 40 years old and in good health;
c. Have a grade point average (from the Master’s degree courses, including the thesis grade and final exam grade, where applicable) of 85 or above;
d. Have a mastery of English - Level requirement: Chinese students:CET-6: 425 or above, HUJI English Requirements:TOEFL : 89 or above; IELTS :7 or above; (Alternatively, if previous academic studies were conducted in English, the candidate can submit an official certificate confirming that English was the language of instruction.)
e. Chose two faculty members to serve as supervisors for the student, with at least one principal supervisor from each institution;
f. Submit application materials: Application forms, official diplomas and/or certificates of study, transcripts, diversity scores, publications and three recommendation letters.
English test score must be submitted by March, 2025.
g. Chinese students should also meet the requirement of 2025 SJTU-SM Graduate Admissions ( http://dripwizz.com/yjsy/info/1059/7058.htm).
2 How to Apply
a. Applicants should complete the online application on the website (http://dripwizz.com/sii/yxyzw.htm).
Chinese students should also submit the application materials on SJTU graduate admission website (http://dripwizz.com/yjsy/zsgz1.htm) before Dec.15.
b. Applicants are required to submit scanned images of all required documents. The application form should be downloaded from the JPD website
3 Application Fee:
Chinese Students: 250 RMB (non-refundable)
International Students: 800 RMB (non-refundable)
4 Scholarship
Both the Home University and the Host University will actively provide scholarships, in its capacity, for Ph.D. students admitted into the program when they do research and work at either institution. Specifically, applicants eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) are encouraged to apply directly to China Scholarship Council (CSC) (http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua) for the scholarship with the recommendation of relevant organizations or Chinese embassies or consulates.
Both sides agree to remit registration fees for the JPD study in the first 5 years period.
5 Evaluation and Admission
a. Candidates will be accepted into the evaluation process in the JPD program following document evaluation together with a preliminary interview by the JPD admission committee.
b. An in-depth interview will be organized in which both SJTU-SM and HUJI-MED faculty members will participate.
c. The admission is based on comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's application materials and interviews.
